  • Although a point of discussion, it is believed that the source of the term SEMS for a bolt with a captive loose washer originated in the 1930’s when E. C. Crowther patented his idea for installing a washer over a screw before thread rolling. These pre-asSEMbled washers were sold in batches, hence the plural SEMS.
